Since my last report things have been slow to say the least, the river came up in flood a week or so ago, I thought that would help matters, but it only brought more frustration, last weekend it was almost impossible to fish, due to the clumps of weed and rafts of debris the size of a small car floating down the river. By wednesday it had dropped by about four feet, so I decided on a short trip, but only a couple of small chub on trotted bread was all I could muster.

12th November 2011 6-1313 Happy days trotting with Lampard

Today the river looked in perfect condition and hopes were high as Aidie and me set off to our swims. I baited the first with trout pellet and crushed boilie’s, a couple of tiny bites were all to show for that, meanwhile Aidie was fishing a swim right under his feet and missing some real good bite’s, well they looked good anyway as I crouched behind him, but they proved impossible to connect with, I gave him a few words of encouragement!!! as you do. Laughing

By now the light was fading fast, it was my turn to suffer the same fate, a tiny tremble and then slam! nothing as the link lead flew into the field behind me, then in the next moment cursing from downstream as Aidie missed yet another bite, this went on right into darkness, at one point it was almost comical had it not been so frustrating. We lost count of the amount of chances that went begging, and left not quite knowing how we did not catch. Another day and most would have been hit, it is a hard phenomenon to explain but I am sure it’s the fish being very cagey, maybe they will lose some of this caution as winter approaches, I do hope so. Mr Nairn,

Far be it from me to offer advice (Christ! I`m about as consistent as the England football team, lots of disappointments and the odd moment of glory) but in the situation you described I honestly believe my "cod" rigs would actually help to connect with one or two of those chances. Although they may look crude the business end of them is very efficient at hooking chub. The key being a small hook (circle if you wish, even better would be an 80`s style bent hook but we better not mention them eh?) I favour Pallatrax stones hooks in 12s to 16s or Solar strong hold wide gapes in 12s all depending on bait size. Bait, hair rigged tight to the shank, a 6mm or 8mm pellet or a 10mm boilie chopped down to look like a pellet, a short (3 to 5") flexible braid hooklink to a semi fixed in line lead. If you can find an in line lead that is weight forward, teardrop shaped so much the better for setting the hook. 2ft of leadcore or not depending on your feelings toward the stuff and a small flying backlead. Fish this monstrosity on a slackish line and sit on your hands, read a book, text, pick your nose or whatever until the tip drags round...and it will, pick the rod up a play the resultant monster to the net..easy eh?

If you are intrigued by the 80`s bent hook reference give me a bell daren`t talk about it in dignified company. Also I reckon you`ll be hauling soon enough so you can probably totally ignore all I`ve written here and continue to put me and the 99.99% of average chub anglers too shame just the way you usually do Razz

Tight lines or should that be slack?
