7th March 2013
A planned day off to take Gary Knowles and his fishing partner Steve to the Stour had turned into a non event, the pair had decided to fish Throop on Tuesday, the day the circus decided to come to town, Throop can be a wonderful place to bag a few big chub, but the battle at times is more with anglers than fish at this time of year, they licked their wounds and headed back to the Great Ouse to find some quieter fishing, leaving a couple of pre-baited swims for me.
Arriving at the river only one other angler was present, and my two swims were left untouched, I baited them again with a few small lumps of 3B paste, and while they were settling down erected my brolly and put the chair under it so my lurcher Stubble could find refuge from the rain, not that he used it, more intent on exploring the river bank, and chasing the odd duck, bless him.
The first swim was fished and apart from a quick chub bite nothing else was doing, I moved upstream with minimal gear and my bucket for a seat, the 3-B was cast downstream and settled just above a bush on my near bank, another quick bite saw me strike into thin air, so another lump of bait was moulded to the hook, and recast in the same baited area.
After perhaps five minutes the tip sprang into life, a swift strike and I was connected to a heavy fish, a real battle on the light chub gear began, a few powerful runs downstream which were matched by heavy pressure, then the battle was won, the golden flanks of a big Stour barbel rolled over the spreader block. A few self takes and she was back into her watery home. At 14lb 7oz it equalled my Stour PB, so it turned out to be a good couple of hours indeed.

great looking fish, is the paste just your winter preference or do you use it all year round ? How long do you fish without a bite before thinking the paste has come off ? Definately a confidence thing in using it, ha ha

Hi, thanks for the pointer, homework duly completed and i spotted the reference to paste preference in autumn and winter in one of the 2011 notes ! Very detailed and enjoyable reads they all were. Please forgive a newbie to the site for not reading them all first before replying to the last post
Out of interest, if you don't mind, why the chub preference as opposed to the old river pig Mr & Mrs Barbel ?

Graham
I have a passion for big chub, and although I do fish for barbel, when the time is right, or I spot a biggie , then the focus is changed, for a short time.
The chub for me and especially big ones, are far more of a challenge. This said it is getting more and more difficult on my favourite river, due to one thing and another. So who knows I may shift to another species if I think the time has come, from what I experienced last season it could be soon.
